I’m Brittany Wilkins.
This is Project Management Masterclass.

The last few episodes of the show focused on drivers of project success and the execution gaps that slow progress in achieving business outcomes. Business is always evolving, so I talked about the reasons for change and followed that with a practical change framework model. Today we are shifting gears. This is less about the tactical drivers of business and more focused on what I call the inner work.

Let me ask you something.
Have you ever felt like you’re doing everything right?

You’re working hard.
You’re meeting deadlines.
You’re showing up.

But somehow you’re still not moving forward.
You’re not getting recognized the way you should.
You’re not getting the opportunities you expected.

And you start to question, what am I missing?

If that’s you, stay with me.
Because the answer is probably not what you think.

Let me tell you about someone I’ll call Jill.

Jill is smart.
She’s dependable.
She executes.

If you give her something to do, it gets done. No excuses. No drama.

But here’s the problem.

Jill keeps getting passed over.
People with less experience are getting promoted.
Her ideas aren’t landing the way they should.
And she’s starting to feel stuck.

So she does what most people do.

She works harder.
Longer hours. More effort. More output.

But nothing changes.

And if you’re listening to this and thinking, yeah, that sounds like me, I want you to keep this in mind:

www.developpowerskills.com

Because what we’re about to talk about is exactly what most people are missing.

Here’s the truth.

Jill doesn’t have a work ethic problem.
She has an execution problem.

And more specifically, she has a power skills gap.

Because success today is not just about what you do.
It’s about how you communicate, how you influence, how you lead, and how you navigate people and dynamics.

And most people were never taught that.

We’ve been sold this idea that if you work hard, you’ll get ahead.

That’s incomplete.

Because I’ve seen people work hard for years and stay in the exact same place.

Why?

Because technical skills might get you in the room, but power skills determine whether you move forward.

Organizations don’t promote effort.
They promote people who can think strategically, communicate clearly, lead without authority, and solve problems under pressure.

If you don’t have those, you stall.

And let me tell you why I care so deeply about this.

Because I’ve seen this play out over and over again.

I’ve worked in environments where people were incredibly talented, smart, capable, hardworking.

But they were stuck.

Not because they didn’t know how to do the job, but because they were never taught how to navigate people, communicate their value, lead without authority, and position their ideas.

And I’ve also seen the opposite.

People with less technical skill move faster and get more opportunities.

Not because they worked harder, but because they understood how to operate.

At some point, I had to step back and ask, what is really separating those who move forward from those who stay stuck?

The answer kept coming back to the same thing.

Power skills.

So let’s make this practical.

If power skills are the difference, then what are the actual skills you need to focus on?

Let’s break down four of them.

First, communication.

Not just talking, but being able to clearly express ideas, align people, and drive understanding.

Because if you can’t communicate your value, it doesn’t matter how good your work is.

Second, leadership.

Not titles, but your ability to influence outcomes even when you’re not in charge.

Projects move through people.

If you can’t lead across teams, you stall.

Third, strategic thinking.

This is what separates task managers from project leaders.

It’s not just about doing the work.

It’s about understanding why it matters, how it connects, and what decisions need to be made.

Without this, you stay reactive.

Fourth, emotional intelligence.

This is where a lot of people underestimate what actually drives results.

Projects don’t fail on paper.
They fail through people.

Miscommunication.
Tension.
Misalignment.
Unspoken issues.

Emotional intelligence is your ability to read the room, understand how people are responding, manage your own reactions under pressure, and navigate difficult conversations effectively.

Because if you can’t manage people dynamics, you can’t manage projects.

And this is often the difference between someone who delivers tasks and someone who drives outcomes.

When you put these together, communication, leadership, strategy, and emotional intelligence, you don’t just execute tasks.

You operate at a different level.

And that’s exactly why I created the Power Skills course.

This isn’t theory.
This isn’t fluff.

This is a structured way to help you build the skills that actually move your career forward.

Because once you understand how to communicate with clarity, lead with intention, think strategically, and navigate people and pressure, everything changes.

So if you’re listening to this and thinking, that’s me, I’ve been doing the work but I’m not seeing the results, then go to:

www.developpowerskills.com

Take a look at the course and start building the skills that actually move your career forward.

Because working harder is not the answer.
Developing the right skills is.

You’re not stuck because you’re not capable.

You’re stuck because no one showed you how to operate at the next level.

And once you learn that, you don’t just work differently.

You move differently.
