Part II. Skills-Technical vs. Power
- Skills are the abilities or proficiencies acquired through training, practice, experience that enable you to perform specific task or activities effectively.
- Skills can be categorized into two categories
- Hard skills which are the technical abilities or knowledge needed for specific task some examples are coding, writing, or operating machinery.
- Soft skills better known today as power skills are personal attributes and interpersonal skills that enhance how tasks are performed and how to engaged with others in the workplace.
Disclaimer: While the focus of this course is Power Skills, this is not to dismiss hard skills that still play a vital role in our development as professionals.
Now that we aligned on the definition of skills, type of skills, and defined power skills. I am going to into more in depth on the different types of power skills giving you broad overview and then in later modules we'll get into the Power of 4 skills needed for project success.
Part III. Power Skills
1. Adaptability: The ability to adjust to new conditions, embrace change, and maintain effectiveness in a variety of situations. Adaptable individuals are resilient and can pivot their approach or mindset to respond to evolving challenges.
2. Relationship Building: The skill of establishing and nurturing meaningful connections with others, based on trust, respect, and mutual understanding. Strong relationship-building fosters collaboration, teamwork, and support within and across teams.
3. Innovative Mindset: The capacity to approach tasks and challenges with curiosity and creativity, constantly seeking new ideas, solutions, and ways of doing things. An innovative mindset encourages continuous improvement and adaptability.
4. Accountability: The ability to take ownership of one’s actions, responsibilities, and decisions. Accountable individuals hold themselves responsible for their successes and failures, seeking to learn and improve consistently.
5. Empathy: The skill of understanding and sharing the feelings and perspectives of others, which fosters compassion, respect, and stronger interpersonal connections. Empathy enables individuals to relate to others' experiences and respond with care.
6. Discipline: The ability to stay focused, committed, and consistent in pursuing goals or completing tasks, even when faced with challenges or distractions. Disciplined individuals are self-motivated and dedicated to achieving their objectives.
7. Purpose Orientation: A focus on aligning actions and decisions with a meaningful purpose or larger goal. Purpose-oriented individuals seek fulfillment in their work by contributing to causes or objectives that resonate with their values.
8. Future-Based Orientation: The skill of anticipating and preparing for future trends, changes, and opportunities. Those with a future-based orientation think strategically, setting long-term goals and adapting to emerging trends to stay relevant and effective.
9.Negotiation -Back and forth communication to reach an agreement between you and one or more other parties.
Those were eight power skills. For this course we will focus on communication, problem-solving, collaborative leadership, and strategic thinking. Again why these four? These were the four power skills consistently the highest ranked across industries and regions. The eight power skills I just discussed are very vital for project professionals to hone. One thing to note is not a matter of when do I use one power skill vs the other. In assessing your scenario and situation think about which power skills are applicable.
